Networking: Switching & Routing
Switching and Routing are the backbone technologies of computer networking that enable data to travel efficiently across networks. Switching operates within a local network (LAN) and is responsible for forwarding data frames between devices such as computers, printers, and servers. A network switch uses MAC addresses to identify devices and ensures that data reaches the correct destination without unnecessary traffic. This improves speed, security, and network performance.
Routing, on the other hand, connects multiple networks together and determines the best path for data packets to travel from one network to another. Routers use IP addresses and routing tables to decide how data should be forwarded across different networks, including the internet. They analyze factors such as network congestion, distance, and link cost to select the most efficient route.
Together, switching and routing provide seamless communication, reliable data delivery, and scalable network infrastructure for homes, offices, and large organizations.
